Make pom pom Christmas tree ornaments for a family craft

When my sister and I were little, my mom always had something crafty around for us to do. I still love going through my family’s old Christmas ornaments, finding all of the macaroni and pipe cleaner ornaments that she helped us make.

So nothing is more near to my heart around the holidays than to make things with my littles. Truly, to see their little faces light up when they finish a project and proudly display it just melts me.

Creating kid-friendly holiday ideas is one of my favorite things to do. I love doing them with my own children, and passing them on to you to try with your kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, students, and more.

So I took a moment to find the best of our holiday ideas for kids. There are so many great ones, but here are some highlights! Be sure to pin your favorites.

A Christmas Craft Idea that kids Love

We recently spent the afternoon together making these pom pom Christmas ornaments, and they were so tickled by how they turned out! It was such a special day.

I got all the materials set up for the kiddos and we got our craft on. Henry was so excited to help choose the decorations for each ornament, and Maggie was just loving rolling around in the pom poms.

Here’s how to make them, if you’d like to start your own holiday craft tradition!

Make Time: 1 Hour

How to Make a Pom Pom Ornament Christmas Craft

Make all of your pom poms using the pom pom maker. (Here’s a simple breakdown if you have never used one!) Tie a long loop on each pom pom to use as a hanger.
Cut various shapes to decorate each pom pom out of the cardstock. We decided on three shapes: antlers, an elf hat, and a scarf. If you’re cutting with kids, you can draw the shapes and have them cut along your lines.
Place a dot of low temp hot glue (low temp is way safer for little kids!) down in the pom pom where you’d like to glue on your cardstock shapes. Press the cardboard into the glue (another good job for the kids!) until the glue cools. Glue a tiny pom pom onto the front of each large pom pom to look like a nose.

Holiday Traditions

Finally, decorate your tree! We let the kids put these on for us and of course they all ended up on the very bottom of the tree. So cute!

I can’t wait to share more traditions with the kiddos this year. We’re taking them both to the local performing arts center to see Maggie’s first musical this Christmas!
